It has been almost a year since my last update on my website.  It has grown stagnant in that nothing has been in forward motion since The Brain Project.  I became ill.  Not that this was something to moan over, more along the lines that it was something to recognise, accept, and slowly improve.  It has only been now, of which has gave me enough energy to begin carving, albeit in short stints and minor works.  I am proud of them, unleashing a different direction into the spiritual realm and appreciating the difficult moments I have endured with this illness.  Incense burners, which I am no stranger to in my daily life, have become a part of the carving family.  Providing a sense of stability in myself *as incense burns in the background*.  In any case, my goal after The Brain Project carving - 250lbs worth of limestone, was to continue on a grandeur fashion.  To complete in full my "Carved Anatomy" project and to build a commentary around it regarding mental health.  Though this is still to come, though, much longer than expected.  I had to listen to my true mental and body health.  That this has become more personal than intended.  This past month has been my first step into the studio as a different person.  A revived and still healing person.  A person who sees the benefits for her own rehabilitation, which in turn, will assist others in theirs.  The commentary is growing and I hope you will continue to follow Carved Anatomy in its journey along with partake in the ride.

Soooo, in saying that shirts are now being produced for the project!  Check out this handsome model...haha  (He has no idea this is online).  Colours are currently black or teal/Caribbean blue with a bone coloured logo.

What happens AFTERWARDS?
The brains will be taken off their proud locations to be photographed for an online auction. Proceeds go directly to the Baycrest Foundation for support, research and innovation regarding Alzheimer's and dementia.

They will be on public display in one location with details to come these coming weeks! Exciting and both sad to see this project dismantled. Thank you again for all your votes, encouragement and assistance!

Tiffany and the Limestone Brain

It has been an adventurous month for both Carved Anatomy and "Petrification" for the Brain Project.  This past weekend I set up my organs and necklaces at Kempenfest of which was a fruitful long weekend.  Lots of vendors, sights, sounds and especially the crowd.  There were deep conversations of which brought light to connections by way of my work.  

The brain was the show pleaser - people wanted to stop and touch it, reminisce with it, enchant it, and support it.  They shared stories from various walks of life.  Those with previous brain injuries, family whom live with dementia an Alzheimer's, general mental health and alternative/experiential education advocates.  Those who are general practitioners, neurological expertise, educators, nurses, RMTs, dieticians, mental health advocates, and interested public came to relay their connection with the brain and then the heart on display.  It was a magical connection - one that will certainly drive my work.

Now, I stand at just under 700 votes.  It will be tricky to stay at the top of artists as there are a few gaining ground.  Especially due to their incredible work and similar stories.  I hope to reach the top to continue advocating, educating, learning, listening and inspiring those touched so deeply by way of mental/body health.  I would be honoured to continue this work on a grander scale, be supported by the community and further the reach for this important cause.  Let's work together to help Baycrest and vote for me HERE //or// www.brainproject.ca/portfolio/tiffany-folmeg.

KEMPENFEST was overall fantastic - it inspired me make this brain pendant.  It later sold the next day while being an artisan this past civic long weekend.

Yesterday, my aunt went for a bike ride to Todmorden Mills, where the brain I carved for Baycrest and The Brain Project is located.  Her photography is always stunning - especially those that capture reflection.  Perhaps she channels Lee Friedlander or Vivan Maier while capturing such beautiful images.  To you, thank you, for taking the time and effort to visit my piece and specifically take pictures with your masterful eye of creativity!

This is truly amazing!  Within two weeks since the voting commenced on www.brainproject.ca - all you wonderful supporters managed to lift me to 300 votes as of today!  Of course, it will be a long shot to gain speed on Matt Bellamy of #muse.  However, the intentions and dream are there - I hope to be in the top 5 by the end of August.

I highly doubt this is how nature develops brain folds, but my Dremel was happy to participate.  Sadly, I went through three Dremels in the process of carving the cranium.  This is certainly usual - two of them were returned due to faulty wiring.  The final one was my gem and has worked overtime for me.  Despite that, this is the beginning of the brain taking shape.  Diamond cutting discs are a gem.  Expensive but a gem!  Eating through limestone like nobody's business.
